Trying to find green ... in greenland!

When Eric the Norvegian discovered Greenland he named it "Groenland"- land of green in order to attract more people to go and live there... When I went to Greenland, I couldn't find green anywhere because It was winter and everything was white! Totally white .And this is the beauty of this land...

Quiet and white... I just took a shot of a "green landscape in winter", using the powerful green gel and covering the lens of my polaroid camera!!!

Northern lights

In Greenland we can see stunning nothern lights betwen September and April. The colors and forms are very different. They can be blue, green, pink, purple and orange. The forms are variable too. The Northern lights move and progress but they do not produce any noise. They catch our attention and they are an attraction for everybody who visits Greenland and hopes to have the chance to see them. You can't look away from this spectacle even if you have to stay outside in the cold freezing but feeling so amazed and really blessed...

Animals

During one evening, we enjoyed seal, dried fish, musk ox, reindeer ... It was a great surprise for all of us to taste these unique flavours of animals that live so far away from our country.

They are all present in the country whether it is on their plate or in nature. How lucky we were to taste them.

And how lucky to meet a bison and a polar bear... fortunately for us, in a souvenir shop!!!

Water

The sea in Greenland is very cold, so unless you are a winter swimmer you would not like to swim in it (not even in the summer). Especially in the winter you can see lots of beautiful icebergs at the sea.

Weather and temperature

Can you guess what is shown on this image? It is actually a curb that shows how the temperature is changing in Greenland due to the global warming.

We visited the Greenlandic Institute of Natural Resaurces. This is about researches into Arctic ecosystems and how they are affected by climatic and human impants. It monitors animal populations, vegetation, physical and chemical parameters in order to follow trends associated with environmental changes.

During the Summer months it is warmest on land closest to the ice sheet. In all parts of the country the weather is changeable .In Greenland, temperature is between -10 °C /-20°C in winter and 10°C /15°C in the Summer . The temperature of the sea is always 0°C .

Landscapes

How amazing can be flying over a land full of snow and icebergs in the sea? A view that takes your breath away and makes you feel so weak in the beauty of nature...

First step on the icy earth and we are dazzled. There is ice and snow everywhere, it's beautiful. In winther it's cold so there is no vegetation but in the summer there are plants, grass ... But in any season the landscape is anyway beautiful.

FLORA IN GREENLAND

Returning home from our trip to Greenland and looking at the photos from the book that my Greenlandic peer Nadia gave me, I noticed some pictures of Nuuk full of colours and flowers in the summer. As they have told us, flora is limited to the southwest coastal zone and consists of mosses, lichens, willows and other creepers... It was a surprise to look at all these beautiful pictures and I thought that this could be a good reason to return and visit this country again in the summer !!!

breaking news: METEOR IN NUUK!!!

A rare and unique phenomenom took place in Greenland on the 3rd January. According to the photos that my Greenlandic peer Anouk posted on instagram the meteor hit Nuuk! She actually posted that " I was standing in my neighbours' kitchen when I suddenly saw the sky lightening up... I deemed they were fireworks but it was actually a meteor hitting the ground". Such a unique image that you rarelly have the chance to see... As Anouk posted the light was so bright that they could see it from other cities in Greenland, hundred kilometres far away from Nuuk. It's a pity that we missed it!!!
