Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear/bring?

  • Water

  • Durable (trail/hiking) shoes

  • Clothes to protect you from scrapes/thorns. Long pants and long sleeves are recommended.

  • Whistle (in case of emergency)

  • Easy-to-eat snack for after your course

Can I come if I have no experience?

Yes! It is advisable for newcomers to try a white or yellow level course, unless you have some other type of adventure racing experience. When you arrive at the event, mention to the volunteer at the registration table that you are new to orienteering. We will teach you the basics and arm you with the knowledge to complete your first course!

Can I go as part of a group?

Yes—you can share one map or purchase additional map(s). Many find it easier to learn if each member has his own map. If you plan on purchasing several additional maps, please send a quick email to the event director so that she prints enough maps.

Any advice?

  • Eat a good meal the night before and/or morning of the event

  • Hydrate the night before the event

  • Take advantage of the resources on this site!

  • Don't be overwhelmed...you won't understand everything for your first, second, or even third race. You will learn something new or improve a skill EVERY race!
