So you've decided you want to go to the beautiful Sorrento and you might be wondering: what is the best way?
There are several ways to get there:
By ferry
By bus
By train
By shuttle (if you're coming from the airport)
Travel time: 1h and a half on average
Cost: from €6
Stress level: low stress 🟩
To go from Naples to Sorrento by bus you have a few options.
One of the best is for sure FlixBus. They go from Naples Metropark (next to Napoli Main Station in Garibaldi) to Sorrento twice a day. They don't get you there early in the morning and won't let you return late in the evening (last bus is around 5pm).
Some website may show you EAV buses, but those are just night buses (which may come handy when you plan coming back after 10pm).
Check Napoli-Sorrento EAV Buses timetable here.
ATTENTION: we strongly suggest you to ask if these EAV buses will work on the day you choose to travel to avoid sad surprises (and spend €100 for a night in Sorrento, if you're lucky!).
Travel time: from 1h to 2h (it depends)
Cost: €3.60
Stress level: medium to high/extreme 🟨🟥
You can take Circumvesuviana train to go to Sorrento.
You can take it from:
Napoli P.zza Garibaldi (Napoli centrale/main station)
Napoli Porta Nolana
If you already know how to go from Naples to Pompeii, then it's easy, it's the same train you've already taken and you know how to get there.
If this would be the first time for you to take Circumvesuviana, here's how you can take this train from Garibaldi.
Get inside the station from the main entrance (follow the picture below)
2. When you're in, go to the right until you'll see Tiger store. Next to it there are stairs which will bring you down.
3. When you're down the stairs, GO TO THE RIGHT
4. Walk around 50m and you'll find Circumvesuviana ticket office on the right and entrance to the tracks on the left
Go there at least 30 min ahead of your train time if it's summer! There might be a long queue to make tickets.
If you want to skip the queue, you can pay with your card at the entrance with Tap&Go system (remember to tap it again when you hop off in Sorrento!).
Especially if you're taking it after a long walk in Naples, it might be comfortable for you to have a chance to sit for an hour along your trip.
To go there, you have to get to this place.
This is the terminal of the Circumvesuviana trains, so you will have a 100% chance of sitting on your train (which will fill up fast!).
It's usually also fresher in this station, because it's windy there sometimes and there is a lot of shadow.
Hopping on a Circumvesuviana train is always a bet:
It might be late
You might hop on the wrong train (always ask "Sorrento?" when you get in, even if it shows the right direction on the track screens)
It might stop a lot of times during the trip in the middle of nowhere because it's Kilometers of one track railway
You may sweat, because if you get on the old trains, there is no air conditioning
You may not have a sit for an hour or so (especially when you come back from Sorrento after 6pm)
We suggest you taking a DD train (direttissimo), which will (hopefully) take you there and back to Naples in more or less 1h.
There is a way!
There is a bus called Curreri which costs €10 and will bring you there in 1:30h!
Unfortunately, the last one is at 19:30 and the first one from Sorrento is at 6:30 am. So if you have a late or early flight, it's not that convenient.
Well, for sure the low stress one would be the bus, cause it leaves from Naples main station and FlixBus is an international and reliable company. Although, it may cost you up to €12!
The easiest and cheapest way is taking Circumvesuviana!
It's up to you, and it depends on where your accomodation is in Naples, but Circumvesuviana is generally the most chosen way to go to Sorrento from Napoli.
We hope you have a lovely stress-free trip to Sorrento!
