In Naples there are 2 lines.
Line 1 (usually represented in yellow) connects the mountainous part of Naples (Vomero area and beyond) with the historical centre.
Here are the stops.
At the time we're writing this, M1 runs every 9/14 minutes (it depends on the hour you take it) from 6am to 11pm.
The whole run from Piscinola to Garibaldi takes 35 minutes on average!
This line is run by ANM (Azienda Napoletana Mobilità), so it has its unique ticket.
You can buy them at Tabacchi and inside metro stations (BRING CASH WITH YOU, and buy tickets at tabacchi to avoid long queues).
The ticket prices are as follow:
€1.10 - one ride ticket (valid on metro/funicular/tram/bus of ANM)
€3.50 - day ticket (valid on all ANM vehicles for one day from the moment of validation)
€12.50 - 7 days ticket (valid on all ANM vehicles for a week from the moment of validation)
€35.00 - 1 month ticket
Check the official ANM page for up-to-date info
Line 2 of Naples Metro goes from San Giovanni and Barra cities (located in the east part of the city) to Pozzuoli (part of Naples Urban Area).
Here are the stops.
At the time we're writing this, M2 runs every 8 min on average and from 5am to 11pm.
The whole path from Pozzuoli to S. Giovanni/Barra takes around 50 minutes.
M2 is run by Trenitalia (Italian national train company).
You can buy tickets:
Tabacchi (🟩 low stress)
Inside any M2 station at automatic machines (🟨 medium stress)
On the Trenitalia app (🟩 low stress)
The fares depend on how far is your destination from your starting point (e.g. if you go from Garibaldi Square to Pozzuoli it costs €2.30, whereas just €1.30 if you go to Mergellina).
M2 tickets are valid only for that one ride!
Check on Trenitalia website, app or inside the M2 stations for full timetables (the app is the best option).
We know that it's already a bit messy until now, but as you may have deducted, after doing some math you may tell that it would cost you €2.40 if you want to take M1 and then a M2 train.
Think twice!
We have integrated tickets, which cost just €1.60!
These kinds of tickets work for any vehicles that you find in Naples and its peripheral areas associated into Naples Urban Area 1 (That we call "NA1" here). So with this ticket (imagining that you want to have fun trying public transport in Naples), you can hop on the M2 in Mergellina, arrive at Montesanto, take the funicular there that brings you up to Vomero and then take the bus to go back to Garibaldi Square (and if you spend just 90 minutes for all this it will cost you just €1.60!).
So, here is how fares work if you plan to take M1 and then M2 (or vice versa, or any other ground/underground transportation in Naples 1).
€1.60 (valid for one ride from the starting point to your final destination) - 90 min ticket
€4.50 - Daily ticket
€16.00 - Weekly ticket
€42.00 - Monthly ticket
It's tricky, but if you read carefully again you will save money.
To buy integrated ticket, just ask for "Unico Napoli" ticket, they'll know what your talking about.
Bring cash always with you
Buy tickets at Tabacchi
Be smart and move at least 1 hour before your desired arrival time at your destination (if you're just getting around) or 2 hours before (if you're going to the airport)
If your map says that with the metro it will take 10 minutes and 20 if you walk, prefer walking (those 10 minutes are unreal)
If your M1 stop is Garibaldi, enter the last wagon of the metro, so you will have a clear way on the escalators and avoid taking the elevators (if you can)
All the useful info is over, if you want keep reading (just for fun!).
Now, let's get to the best tips and tricks we can give you to avoid arriving late or miss your train/flight.
Wheter you take M1 or M2, as you've read, it's not like in any other big city in the world where the metro passes every 4 or 5 minutes.
On average, if you're lucky enough, you'll wait at least 5 minutes (up to 14!) at any metro station!
Let's assume you want to go from Vomero (because your accomodation is there, maybe near Vanvitelli metro station) to Naples Airport, and you want to be there at 10am (because your flight leaves at 12.30pm). Let's also assume that you haven't bought any tickets yet on that morning.
We know that you have to:
Take M1 from Vanvitelli to Garibaldi
Take Alibus from Garibaldi Square to Airport
Easy, right?
NO!
You do your check-out at 9am and arrive at Vanvitelli M1 station at 9.15 more or less, fresh and happy after a great shower
You enter the station, go to ticket machines, there is a queue, you wait 10 minutes
It's 9.25, finally you got to the ticket machine, but it only accepts CASH, and you don't have them! 😅
You start asking around where is the nearest bank to withdraw (fortunately at Vanvitelli there is one next to the station), you put your card in, and you withdraw €20.
Of course the machine down there doesn't accept €20, so you go in a bar and buy anything (more 15 minutes have passed, it's 9.40)
You go down the station again, you make the queue again (this time you're lucky, there is just 1 person ahead)
You take your ticket, validate it, pass through the turnstile and then... "where is Garibaldi direction?" (there is, it's just a faded sign, look up! 😉)
You finally rush down the stairs (infinite stairs), arrive to the track, the led screen says "next train in 12 minutes"... 😰😰😰
It's 9.57am (and you should be already at the airport), the metro arrives, you jump on it.
After 25/30 minutes you arrive at Napoli Garibaldi. You see people running away from the train like there is somebody chasing them, you ask yourself why while walking and following the crowd. You arrive at the elevator, you see a lot of people and just 2 elevators, you start looking for stairs.
It's 10.35am (your flight is in 2 hours), you start kindly asking people to move away from your way while climbing up the stairs (infinite stairs), that take 5 minutes to climb 🥵
It's 10.40, finally you arrive at Garibaldi Square... you climb the last 30 stairs and you go toward the main train station
You know you have a Alibus at 10.50, but you can't find where the bus stop is, plus you need the ticket! But you know you can do that onboard as you did 3 days ago when you arrived in Naples.
You start asking around with your suitcase and backpack, finally somebody indicates you the stop!
You see it passing and stopping... yeah! You made it! You jumped on the Alibus! Fortunately you have cash this time.
You buy the ticket, you sit, there is traffic.
It's 11am and you're still at Garibaldi Square, because cars won't give the way to the bus and people crossing won't respect the red light for pedestrians (15 min bus, maybe on another planet).
Your bus finally turns, some traffic here and there, at 11.25 you arrive at the Airport 🤩😱
You went through so many emotions and sensations that it just came to mind that your gate closes in 30 minutes (your flight still leaves at 12.30 and you start hoping it to be late as well).
You RUN, arrive at the check-in, you start asking in a less kind way to let you check in your luggage before the others.
You start breathing so deeply that you barely can talk.
Finally you're at your desk, it's 11.50am, you do a 10 min check in because you have 1kg more in your suitcase 😭😭😭
It's 12pm, you've made it, you climb the stairs running screaming to people because they won't keep their f***ing right while on escalators!
You arrive at security check, you ask to pass, you take up to 10 minutes more (people start looking at you weirdly).
You run like Forrest Gump, you arrive at the gate at 12.20pm
The steward was luckily waiting for you, you almost faint.
You board on your flight at 12.25, with everybody staring at you.
The same thing applies for trains (and imagine if you had your flight back from Rome!).
The night before your departure, you save some cash after drinking your last Gin Tonic
You wake up at 7am, you do your check-out at 8am, at 8:15am you arrive at Vanvitelli metro station
Oh look! There is a Tabacchi nearby, you enter, ask for a metro ticket, you pay with cash (1 min)
You go down in the station, you can't find Garibaldi direction so you ask. You go down the stairs and arrive at the track
The led screen says "Next train in 12 minutes"
It's 8.30am, the train finally arrives PACKED. You choose to enter at the very last wagon of the train.
You get in, while on the metro you check on the map where the Alibus stop is at Garibaldi Square because Naples Stress Free has told you where it is
You get at 9am at Garibaldi, train's last stop.
You've read Naples Stress Free, so you know that if you entered the last wagon you know that you will be the first to climb the escalators (so i takes more or less 2 minutes).
You get out from the station, you arrive at the Alibus stop at 9:10am, next bus is in 5 minutes (nice!)
The bus is 5 minutes late, no problem, your flight is in 3 hours and a half.
You arrive at Naples airport at 9:35am.
We hope you have a stress-free day!
