There is a lot of misconceptions when it comes to taking a cab in Naples.
Some common questions are:
Are they reliable?
How do I know if it's not a scam?
How do I recognize an official taxi in Naples?
How do I trust a taxi driver?
Is it dangerous?
If you need (or prefer to get around with) a taxi, it's not a difficult thing to do in Naples and it's a piece of cake.
The following are the things that will let you recognize an official taxi in Naples and avoid bad surprises.
Whenever you need a taxi, make sure you actually approach to a taxi first and ask there to the driver if it is available to bring you wherever you need to go.
Even if it might sound or look like official, never be ashamed to say "no" to whoever proposes you "Taxi?"
An official taxi in Naples will have these 2 main elements:
The TAXI sign on top
The license number (C.P. 3760 in the example above) and Naples Municipality logo on the side
Once you've recognized that the taxi is an official one and you've chosen which is the best that suites you, make sure you do these things before you get in:
Tell the driver where you want to go and how much more or less will cost (Ask also if there are any extra for any possible reasons, e.g. pets, luggages etc.)
Note down the 4 numbers you see on the side (so if you forget something onboard, or you will notice any bad behavior from the taxi driver, you can easily solve the situation later)
If you are going to any of the following 4 destinations, ask for the pre-fixed fare (which is a fixed price that, depending on where you take your cab, will let you save money). In this case, the driver is obliged to give you a receipt of the ride before even starting it!
Airport
Central station
Via Partenope (hotels by the sea)
Port / Municipio Square
Tell your driver if you have luggages, how big they are and how many and check if fares correspond
These are the important things to check once you've got on a cab in Naples:
If the taximeter is absent inside the cab (it's mandatory for them), don't make any questions and say "ops!!! sorry I forgot something! We can't go there now!" and GET OFF! Don't even try starting an argument on that, don't waste your precious time!
If the taximeter starts from a high price, ask the reason and if the answer doesn't convince you, check the fares inside the cab and make your calculation before even starting the ride (it should start from 3€ up to 10€ in the centre, 5€ from the airport, it also depends on how many of you are, if you have luggages etc.)
If you ask for the pre-fixed fare, the taximeter should be at 0€ (and remain like that until the end) and the taxi driver is obliged to give you a receipt with the total cost of the ride before even starting the ride
While enjoying your ride, check the taximeter sometimes and look if the driver is going around and around to let time pass. He's just trying to steal a bit more of your money!
Remember that if you call a taxi with your phone or if you book it through an app like Freenow, the taximeter starts in the exact moment the taxi is reserved (and not when you get in it).
For all fares, check this website: https://www.taxinapoli.it/en/tariffs/ (it should be always up-to-date and based on Naples municipal fares).
