Naoki Shibamiya is a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at the University of Tokyo. His research centers on "politics of environment" amid ecological crises. During 1.5 years of fieldwork (2022-2024), he immersed himself among youth climate activists in Metro Manila, the Philippines. Here, the climate crisis goes beyond the mere alteration of Earth's systems, intricately interwoven with an oppressive socio-political atmosphere deeply rooted in the nation’s postcolonial history. His dissertation, currently in progress, explores various topics, including the problematization of global climate change within the Philippine context and the life stories of each youth as they navigate their activist life. Utilizing ethnography, the dissertation aims to vividly portray "the political" emerging from the multi-scales of "frictions" between climate activists and their crisis-ridden surroundings. Delving into the intersection of environments, politics and humanity, his research contributes to the current interdisciplinary reconsideration of the human condition in the Anthropocene. This is reflected in his latest publication, "Resistance to the Biopolitics of Resilience in the Philippines after Super Typhoon Yolanda: An Analysis of the Literary Anthology Agam" (Asian and African Area Studies, 2023, in Japanese).
