We highly recommend having a fully functioning phone while abroad. Relying solely on WiFi is typically not sufficient. Check with you phone service provider about international plans, or use a local SIM card. To use a local SIM card, your phone must be unlocked. If your phone is paid off, you can ask your phone service provider for the unlock code. Make sure you do this before you go abroad.
Here are some comments from the previous students regarding the phone:
- I got a local sim card, but a lot of students had T-mobile which was convenient.
- I would recommend going to the Singtel store and setting up a short term plan, if possible.
- Buy a SIM card from the airport and replace the one in your phone from home with the new one
- I just bought a prepaid sim card (I used Singtel) and used it in my personal phone. If I would go back would bring an old phone with me (I thought I could get a cheap tracc phone there but there really aren’t any). I would buy an M3 sim card (Singtel was fine but M3 had MUCH better international plans). I mainly used WhatsApp to contact people in Singapore and I facetimed my family back home.
