SELF-EVALUATION UPDATE
We are working with each Local Authority to establish the new automated self-evaluation process. We hope to have all in place as soon as possible.
Please contact your Local LTA Contact if you and your school/setting would like to submit self-evaluations. They will advise when the system will be ready for use.
High quality Learning, Teaching and Assessment is key to improving learner outcomes. We know from speaking with a wide range of practitioners - both in schools and settings and from central teams, that we want to further improve our practice and learner outcomes. Our inspection reports also tell us that we need to build a greater shared understanding of high-quality learning, teaching and assessment.
Our data tells us that we need to target improvement activity within the following themes:
Building a Shared Understanding
Environment, Experiences and Interactions
Pace, Challenge and Differentiation
Learner Participation and Ownership of Learning
Effective Use of Data
Integral to improvement within theses themes is high quality Leadership of Learning, Teaching and Assessment. In order for us to get the learning right, we need to create the right culture and conditions for learning. We then need to know whether learning experiences are leading to achievement. This is why the cross-cutting themes of culture, learning and achievement (Hattie, 2023), run through each element of the toolkit.
In recent months, experienced practitioners from each of our eight local authorities have been working together to create ‘overviews’ for each of the above themes. Each overview provides key features of highly effective practice, along with real life examples. Alongside the overviews are self-evaluation tools to support teams to evaluate their practice within each theme.
These core resources form the basis of our Northern Alliance Learning and Teaching Toolkit along with wider resources to support improvement activity within schools and settings. Use the Toolkit menu to explore the selection of resources within each theme:
The toolkit has been designed to support you to take a ‘deep dive’ into core aspects of learning, teaching and assessment. By focusing on one area of need, you will be able to work together as a team to evaluate your practice and through targeted activity, build a shared understanding of high quality learning, teaching and assessment across your whole school/setting – reducing variation and improving quality.
The toolkit is an ideal resource to support improvement activity as part of your school/setting improvement plan. The toolkit should not be seen as an ‘add-on’ to the work of your school/setting or local authority. It has been designed to add value to existing practice and resources.
Over the course of this session 2024-25, a team of seconded experienced practitioners from each of the local authorities developed the toolkit in collaboration and worked with a small number of schools/ settings to test it and make further improvements based on user feedback.
Since the toolkit launched in August 2024, schools across the Northern Alliance have been using the toolkit, alongside local resources, to support their improvement journey.
To date, 230* schools have used the self-evaluation tool generating over 3,731* responses and their data is helping shape improvement plans.
If you are interested in finding out more about the Northern Alliance LTA toolkit, get in touch with your Local Authority link officer - details can be found on the Contact page.
