TIM Project

After beginning our chases in August 2020, I decided I needed a higher goal in the realm of meteorology. So, i began searching around the internet and found there were some fellow storm chasers, as well as STEM classes that were using brake rotors and inexpensive parts to build research probes that can be deployed into tornadoes while still being able to recover and reuse the probes in future chases. In 2013, one of my role models that I watched with my dad on Storm Chasers, Tim Samaras was killed in a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma. Harley Gannon and I are currently in the development stages of the TIM (Tornado Intercept Module) probe named as a tribute to Tim Samaras. The probe will be ready by April 1st, 2021. TIM will record dew point, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure inside and near tornadoes. This data will then be donated to the National Weather Service to aid in tornadic research. Each probe deployment will be logged here for the public. The full data sets will be strictly between the Nader Chasin team and the organizations in which we choose to share it with.

8/28/2020: TIM is announced.

9/29/2020: TIM enters the design phase.

3/8/2021: TIM enters the research and development phase. The probe is rated to EF3 force winds.

4/10/2021: TIM enters field testing.
