Celebrate Juneteenth in SD

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a significant cultural event in the United States, and South Dakota is no exception. While South Dakota has a relatively small African American/Black population, there are still efforts to recognize and celebrate Juneteenth across the state.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to acknowledge the importance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans on June 19th, 1865. Some cities and organizations in South Dakota host annual Juneteenth events.

On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday. In 2022, Governor Kristi Noem signed a bill making South Dakota the last state in the U.S. to officially recognize June 19th as a legal state holiday.

How can I celebrate?
