What is the MLDB?
It's an effort to fill the gaps in the Nigerian Dwarf pedigree history, and to bridge the divide between ADGA-registered animals and all the AGS, IDGR (and other) animals that came before. It is very much a work in progress.
Why is it needed?
Because of this:
All too often when searching for even the most influential animals in the breed, the online database at adgagenetics (a wonderfully useful site created by Gene Dershewitz!) arrives at a dead end. ADGA has limited resources and has no apparent plans to include older ND animals in this database. Neither AGS nor IDGR has an online database. Before this history is lost, and to provide a more complete and more accessible record of the breed, we would like to collect as much pedigree data as possible, which will also allow us to provide accurate COIs at least 10 generations deep, a necessary and basic breeding tool which is now dangerously - for the long-term health of the breed as a whole - lacking.
We plan to include pictures where possible as well as to record such breed-specific features as blue eyes. Currently the database has approximately 3,300 animals. You can help.
Help us celebrate the breed and record the ancestors!
