Quarterly Book Project

For their quarterly book project students chose a book to read that relates to a topic discussed that quarter. The book can be either non-fiction or historical fiction but it must relate to a topic from the quarter. Through this project, students are allowed to explore history in a new and creative avenue by seeing its relation to literature and making those connections while often seeing a more personalized approach to history.

Lewis and Clark Journal Entries

When writing journal entries for Lewis and Clark, students research the Lewis and Clark expedition as well as read digitized transcripts of original Lewis and Clark journal entries. Once they have conducted their research, they take the information to write their own original journal entries reflecting the realities of life for the Corps of Discovery.

African American Biography Project

To celebrate African- American History Month, students chose an influential member of the African-American community to research and create a biography about. Their biography had to include chapters on their background and childhood, education, career and/or activism, and their legacy. It also had to include supplementary pictures, a glossary, and a complete bibliography. These biographies were then presented to elementary students to help enrich their knowledge of African- American History as well.

World War II Test

In addition to a wide variety of projects students complete, they do have to take more traditional tests as well. Below is an example of a test I created for my unit on World War II. It includes a map (as I believe basic map skills are important in our modern, global community), multiple choice, and writing to ensure that students not only know the content but can also explain it and its importance.
