The My Name Matters Campaign was founded in 2021 by Bekehm Mohn. It is an initiative that focuses on advocating for the recognition and use of preferred or chosen names for individuals at Mercer University. It was created to address the need for inclusivity and respect for individuals who wish to be identified by names other than their legal names. The campaign successfully led to the implementation of the Preferred/Chosen Name Policy in August 2022, allowing students, faculty, and staff to request a preferred name to be used 'wherever reasonably possible'. The campaign also aims to restore and document the history of LGBTQ+ communities at Mercer, ensuring that their experiences and contributions are recognized and preserved. Additionally, the campaign is involved in various activities, such as hosting events and research projects related to LGBTQ+ history and inclusivity on campus.
We believe in the inherent dignity of every individual, and one powerful way we honor this is by recognizing and respecting the names people choose for themselves. The My Name Matters Campaign serves as a reminder that our names are more than just labels—they are reflections of our identities, our stories, and our journeys.
This initiative was born out of a collective desire to foster an environment of inclusion, respect, and understanding. By advocating for the use of preferred or chosen names, we are not only affirming the identities of our students, faculty, and staff but also standing in solidarity with those who have been historically marginalized or overlooked. The successful implementation of the Preferred/Chosen Name Policy in 2022 marked a significant step forward, providing an avenue for individuals to be seen and heard in a way that honors who they truly are.
But the My Name Matters Campaign is about more than just policy changes. It is about recognizing the rich, often overlooked history of LGBTQ+ communities at Mercer, ensuring their stories and contributions are celebrated, documented, and preserved. It is about creating a campus culture where everyone’s identity is not only acknowledged but celebrated.
As we continue to advocate for inclusivity and equity, we are reminded that the work we do today shapes the future we build tomorrow—a future where everyone is respected, valued, and empowered to live authentically. Through this campaign, we are committed to making sure that truth is lived out every day at Mercer University and Macon.
Together, let us ensure that every individual feels seen, heard, and respected, because our names matter, we all matter.
