numbers but does not apply to calculations involving subtraction and division (Communicating).

Description of Lesson:

• Orientation [5 mins] – Review the definition of variable. (Letters represent numbers and letters have different values. eg. a+ b= 12)
• Introduction [10 mins] – Written down the definition of Commutative Property- We can swap numbers over and get the same answer (Commutative Property only apply on addition and multiplication). When we add, a +b=b +a, for example, 6+3=3+6; When we multiple, a*b=b*a, for example, 2*4=4*2. We also could call it “reversible law.”
• Activity 1 [20 mins] – Comic Book Super Heroes- Teacher to walk around during the activity

Step1: Discuss does order of numbers matter when multiplying or adding?

Step2: Using this information, try to draw a super hero whose super powers incorporates the fact that order doesn't matter.

Step3: Your super hero could be a man, a woman, a dog, a robot, anything!

Step 4: Label your super hero Commutative

• Activity 2 [10 mins] - Kahoot！ Students complete online game- https://create.kahoot.it/details/4c81872e-2665-4f3c-ad8f-269d77c47087.
• Conclusion [5 mins] - Teacher-led discussion recapping the key learning ideas what is commutative property. Why "commutative" ... ? Because the numbers can travel back and forth like a commuter. Project a commutative property song for students.
• Homework- Have students complete Commutative addition and Commutative multiplication Worksheets.
