During the first week, I spent my most of my time to get to know the children and to get familiar with their individual routine as well as observe their style of learning, as I believed in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that children need to be sissified at their basic needs first (physiological needs) to get ready for the next stage of need (Mcleod, 2023c). Through observation, I noticed that children were interested in sensory play which I decided to implement a “Food play – scooping Weetbix” on Friday 15.09.2023, a small group observation documentation would be attached below to explain the experience.
18.09.2023 - 29.09.2023
As observed from the group experience from the first week, it highlighted that one of the children was not really interested in the play, however, she still did come to join in group time, but for short attention. In order to continue assisting her to develop her fine-motor skills, I chose another individual experience for her on the second week, and for others if they were interested, which was “rescue the toys” on Thursday 21.09.2023, an observation document for her is attached below. Moving to the third week, I observed that the children were interested in ball playing, and I planned it into the curriculum, I created it into an inquiry-based curriculum of record the learning under daily journal as part of the pedagogical documentation of colour recognition learning journey by starting to implement a simple basketball (Thursday 28.09.2023) which experience I think it would help the children in improving their aiming skills and hand-eye coordination, as well as help children in colour recognition and I believed in Piaget’s theory that children should take control of their learning (Mcleod, 2023e).
Following up with inquiry curriculum from week 3, I extended the colour recognition learning journey into colour popping experience, where I made up a bubble wrap popping table as a group experience for children to practice their fine-motor skills as well as their social skills, which was implemented on Thursday 05.10.2023. The colour learning journey lasted to week 5 which children had the opportunity to use texture and colour to colour the caterpillar, as another educator started a caterpillar with sandbox for sensory play, so that I combined the colour learning journey with the caterpillar experience on Tuesday together and turned it into a “caterpillar colouring” on Thursday 12.10.2023.
04.10.2023 - 13.10.2023
16.10.2023 - 27.10.2023
Approaching to week 6, I continued with the colour learning journey with peg & board experience and helped the children to develop their cognitive skills of problem-solving skills in stacking the pegs on boards beside colour recognition learning. The children were not very enaged in much; however, they still made their attempts in play. Therefore, I transferred the colour learning into something they were interested in, which was sensory-play, and that made me to come up with the idea of playdough experience on the following week, Thursday 26.10.2023. Most of the children enjoyed outdoor play where they would run, jump and did a lot of physical play, it could prove from the curriculum that children always spent time at outdoor, almost every days in a week. From my observation, that one child really interested in leaves and natural, who would always approach the bush at the yard and pick up the dry leaves under the bush, which made me add leaves to the playdough experiene. In the same week, I noticed that some of the older children started mumbling and pronouning words and most of the children were starting to recognise their name when they were called, I added on name recognition learning beside sensory play, which I adapted from Vygostky’s theory that I scraffolded the children’s learning and development and enhance their learning to have better outcomes (Mcleod, 2023a), I did a group time greeting with the children with their name tag flashcards on Thursday 26.10.2023.
Heading to week 8, I continued the group time greeting with children on Thursday 02.11.2023 and Friday 03.11.2023. During week 8, it was a week that the centre celebrated Halloween which Halloween related experience needed to be planned throughout the week, therefore, on Thursday 02.11.2023, I put up the “pumpkin making with playdough”, as I reflected on the previous experiences we had on Monday and Tuesday that pumpkin experience was implemented already, and I changed the experience to “ghost and spider making with playdough” on the day. The reason of choosing play dough for this experience was that children were interested in the playdough since the last play dough play. Moreover, they seemed like to play with friends at the tray tuff which I implemented another “painting and decorating craft” on Friday 03.11.2023, specifically was painting little triangle ghost at the tray tuff as a group time after we did group greetings.
Moving to week 9, I did group reading (Thursday 09.11.2023) instead of group greetings to enhance children literacy learning in-depth of meaning of words and pronunciation. Moreover, it was National Recycling Week, I did a few experiences about recycling experience which were “cardboard with pop-sticks” on Thursday 09.11.2023. A “Firework painting with paper rolls” experience also was implemented on the same day to introduce and celebrate Diwali with the children, as according to Bronfenbrenner’ theory, I believed children would learn from their community and surrounding, so that they should learn about their community and how to respect diversity at their living and learning environments (Guy-Evans, 2023).
30.10.2023 - 10.11.2023
In the last week of my placement, I implemented again colour recognition learning and enhance the challenges in learning by setting it as a sorting game for children, on Thursday 16.11.2023. The children were engaged the play quite enthusiasm per my observation and they were able to share with their friends. On Friday 17.11.2023, I did a colour changing experiment in the bag which allowed children to squish to touch (sensory play) and to see the colour started changing by each time they squished the bag (STEM learning).
