My name is Alyssa Brazell and I am a registered occupational therapist. This website was the main component of my doctor of occupational therapy capstone project and it quickly turned into a passion project.
I partnered with Camp Gilmont's Circle of Friends camp in Gilmer, Texas, to complete this project. Circle of Friends is a weekend-long camp for children with developmental disabilities and their families. Children get partnered with eager volunteers while parents and caregivers receive respite for the weekend.
As I experienced the camp for the first few times, I was overwhelmed with the joy we were able to bring these families. I was also able to get to know the families and hear about their struggles and their needs. It was through discussion with the parents and caregivers that came the idea of the creation of this website. I discovered that these families needed more resources, especially for advocating for their children in the school system. I decided to use my knowledge of occupational therapy, as well as the resources I knew of, to create this website.
While I know this website does not have every detail and every answer to every question in the world, it is my hope that it will be a stepping stone for parents who are embarking on their journey with a child with a disability and special needs.
