Everyone uses it but nobody stops to consider how much it actually impacts our daily lives. For this project we were tasked to investigate the impacts of social media on society as well as among ourselves.
Everyone in our class was given the opportunity to take an "Am I ADDICTED to social media" quiz. I like to believe that I have a healthy relationship with my social media usage, this quiz helped to reinforce that notion.
"Congratulations! Psychologists estimate that as many as 5 to 10% of Americans meet the criteria for social media addiction today. But luckily, that's not you! Not checking social media every few minutes doesn't make you feel anxious, as you prefer to live 'in the moment' rather than through your apps. You use social media to your advantage, at work and to connect with friends and family, but you know when to put it away. Keep it up!"
Social media isn't a bad thing. In fact, some may argue that social media has served as a way to connect with people that they may have never met because they live somewhere else in the world. Social media can be very informative and there is something to be learned. Take for example these statistics taken from the pew research center. Many teenagers site social media as being a positive place where they can meet new people, be entertained, feel accepted, and learn new things.
However, that's not to say that social media is all sunshine and rainbows. Anybody can make a social media account on any platform. There is a large sense of anonymity due to the lack of identification. Anyone out there can pose as someone else and people would be non the wiser. Social media can be used to spread false or even harmful information to very open minded yet gullible users. There are ways to work around these kinds of internet "trolls". Be sure to always get a second take on anything that you hear on the internet; take time to verify anything you hear with a friend or a family member. You can even search it up on the internet if you feel so inclined. The way I like to do it is if I see the same claim from multiple unrelated sources then the information is most likely believable.
In My opinion:
There is no getting rid of Social media. As long as people continue to exist there will always be an interconnected network of individuals who will share their opinions with one and other. We should learn to take advantage of this wonderful tool that we've been given, but we can't let it completely consume our society and base our opinions off of everything we see.
What did I learn?
I learned that social media provides individuals with ways of communicating with each other. Many people site social media as something that can be addicting which is why we must practice self control as to not be overwhelmed by our social media usage.
