My Base

Social Security's Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program limits the amount of earnings subject to taxation for a given year. The same annual limit also applies when those earnings are used in a benefit computation. This limit changes each year with changes in the national average wage index. We call this annual limit the contribution and benefit base. This amount is also commonly referred to as the taxable maximum. For earnings in 2024, this base is $168,600.

A base period covers 12 months and is divided into four consecutive quarters. The base period includes wages subject to SDI tax that were paid about 5 to 18 months before your disability claim began. The base period does not include wages paid at the time your disability begins. For a DI claim to be valid, you must have at least $300 in wages in the base period. The following information may be used to determine the base period for your claim.

January, February, or March:

The base period is the 12 months ending last September 30.

Example: A claim beginning February 14, 2022, uses a base period of October 1, 2020, through September 30, 2021.

April, May, or June:

The base period is the 12 months ending last December 31.

Example: A claim beginning June 20, 2022, uses a base period of January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2021.

July, August, or September:

The base period is the 12 months ending last March 31.

Example: A claim beginning September 27, 2022, uses a base period of April 1, 2021, through March 31, 2022.

October, November, or December:

The base period is the 12 months ending last June 30.

Example: A claim beginning November 2, 2022, uses a base period of July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022.

Alternate base year periods

A period of time that may be used to determine the Unemployment Insurance benefit amount you may be eligible to, if you do not qualify using the regular base period.

Claims examiner

A member of our unemployment insurance staff who determines your eligibility for benefits based on available information. A claims examiner will contact you to clarify wages or other matters that could affect your eligibility.

Corporate Officer

If you are an officer of a corporation, or you own more than a 5% equitable or debt interest in the corporation, and your unemployment claim is based on wages with the corporation, you will not be considered unemployed during your term of office or ownership. Since you are not considered unemployed, your claim will be held invalid and you will not receive benefit payments.

Your past wages are one of the eligibility requirements and the basis of your potential unemployment benefit amounts. To be eligible for benefits based on your job separation, you must be either unemployed or working reduced hours through no fault of your own. Examples include layoff, reduction in hours or wages not related to misconduct, being fired for reasons other than misconduct, or quitting with good cause related to work.

Your maximum benefit amount (MBA) is the total amount you can receive during your benefit year. Your MBA is 26 times your weekly benefit amount or 27 percent of all your wages in the base period, whichever is less.
