Description:
The Global Project was assigned to find a location that interested me and to research the basic and digital demographics and capabilities of the area, researching the digital divide. Italy is a place I have always wanted to visit due to its beautiful weather, landscape, and rustic culture.
Locations and Details:
My partner Mikaela chose Seychelles, Africa. My location was Pantelleria, Italy, a small island off Sicily.
Seychelles has limited access to more complex technologies compared to bigger, more populated countries. Due to being a popular tourist spot, Seychelles has access to several choices for broadband data/mobile/internet access in its urban/tourism areas. Compared to many African countries, this divide between technological accessibility is considered wide due to this access (contributed to the income received due to tourism compared to other African countries).
Tourists and locals have access to Wi-Fi, data roaming, and even internet cafes!
Pantelleria recently added fiber optic networking to boost the internet capabilities of the island for tourism and exporting goods. Like Seychelles, they had basic Wi-Fi at resorts and cafes, and also used radio wave networking to monitor landslides and rock fall activity. As of 2024 they are more up to date and moving faster with fiber optic networking.
Lessons Learned:
This project helped me refine my skills on a word document, broaden my knowledge on power point, and use my searching skills. I learned how to maneuver through different search engines to find the information I needed. Some had different sites to search. It was difficult to locate some of the digital demographics. I had to use outside sources because the CCBC library did not have the content on my location. It's information was extremely limited.
I was able to move my information from Word to Power Point and format it to the slide that my partner had started. I also added slides and made a reference page in ADA format. I had to look that up to know what it was. Initially, Mikaela and I sent messages through the discussion board, then emailed each other so we could share links to the work we had done. Because our schedules were a bit crazy, coordinating was hard. I provided my phone number so we could access and respond to messages quickly when finalizing the slides.
