Project Description:
I was to research at least three articles on any emerging technology and find the importance, risks, affects on daily lives, and the latest advancements with the technology.
Artificial Intelligence in Radiology
I chose the emerging technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Radiography.
I am applying to the radiography program at CCBC and wanted to know what new information was developing in the radiography field. I know how important it is to position a patient correctly to capture one image, which allows for a low radiation dose. A good image gives the Radiologist the best chance of a correct diagnosis. I wanted to know what AI could do to advance the field. Or if it would try to take the place of Radiologists and eliminate my field of study.
Why is it important?
AI implementation is creating an advanced and better opportunity for the world. AI helps break down images pixel by pixel to create a closer look for better detection of cancers, broken bones, and other diseases. Early detection will save numerous lives!
How will it affect everyday life?
By implementing AI into all radiology departments better patient care can be demonstrated by better image readings and lower radiation dose images performed. Thus, creating a better environment for patients and radiologists and radiography technicians. Also allowing radiologists more time with patient care and treatment planning.
What are the possible advantages and disadvantages?
I can only see advantages with this emerging technology. The software allows for a second set of eyes and is a tool to use with the knowledge of a radiologist. The two need to work together for the best outcome. Implementing AI training into schools will allow this to happen and improve imaging as a whole. The only disadvantage I can see happening is a bug in the system that prevents it from doing what it is suppose to. As with any computer system, it can go down or malfunction.
What are the potentials risks or threats this technology may introduce? How will those risks be managed?
In all the articles I read, no risks were mentioned. AI is not 'taking over', it is a tool used to help. I'm sure with the advancement of the software it will become a permanent structure in the radiography field. Constant monitoring and upgrades will develop to improve the system. Radiologists will be the ones to give feedback and monitor the system since they will be the ones using the tech.
What is the latest news and advancements?
AI is 'emerging', but is currently being used in some locations. RadNet is working with iCad, a radiography company and an AI software company, to develop a type of 'one team' organization to take over imaging performance across the globe. The merge of these two companies can help provide advanced imaging detection, better patient care, and low dose radiation images for all patients. Early detection is the main goal!

What I learned:
I chose three different articles that incorporated some of the same information, but offered it in different ways. Overall, the advancement of emerging AI into the radiography field is to provide better patient care and early detection in cancer. RadNet is acquiring businesses to help incorporate iCad software to benefit as many patients as possible. Implementing AI software and machines into schools to allow radiologists and radiography technologists to use them in the field is the next step in advancement. AI is used as an added tool to assist radiologist with reading images and making more accurate diagnosis, for early detection and better outcomes for patients. I did not read one bad take on this technology. It improves results for patients and does not eliminate and radiologist, or technologists' job.
