STEMprov - Lisa Kelly and Kristy Hartsgrove Mooers

Use improv to improve your scientific communication!

Lisa Kelly is a director, stage manager, and dramaturg for Riverside Theatre in Iowa City and Theatre Cedar Rapids in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has been leading STEMprov workshops for graduate students at the University of Iowa for the past several years and has attended STEMprov facilitator training from the creators of the program at UW-Madison. She has also worked with University of Michigan’s CRLT Players troupe which incorporates improv, short plays, and guided discussion to coach faculty and students to respond to difficult issues on campus. Lisa is interested in how theatre games and activities can improve communication skills, critical thinking skills, and self-confidence in graduate students, particularly in STEM fields. Lisa is currently a PhD candidate in the Interdisciplinary PhD in Theatre and Drama at Northwestern University and an Assistant Director of Academic Support and Retention at the University of Iowa.

Kristy Hartsgrove Mooers is a lecturer in the Department of Theatre at the University of Iowa, where she teaches Acting for Success, a course that uses acting techniques to help students give better pitches, presentations and interviews, and Improv for Engineers and the Curious, which uses improvisation as a grammar for creativity and group work. She has appeared in plays at Riverside Theatre, Iowa Summer Repertory, The Old Creamery Theatre, Working Group Theatre, Illinois Shakespeare Theatre, and Boho Theatre of Chicago. She has taught acting and theatre appreciation at Coe College, Cornell College, and Illinois State University.
