A concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a sudden impact, jolt, or rapid acceleration–deceleration of the head that disrupts normal brain function. Contrary to common belief, a concussion does not require a direct blow to the skull or a loss of consciousness.
Common physical symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, and balance problems. Cognitive effects often involve confusion, slowed thinking, difficulty concentrating, and memory disturbances. Emotional and behavioral changes—such as irritability, anxiety, or mood swings—are also common. Sleep disruptions, including insomnia or excessive drowsiness, frequently occur as well.
At MVMT + BALANCE, concussion care begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the visual, vestibular, cervical spine, and postural control systems to identify each individual’s specific areas of impairment. This detailed assessment allows us to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and precisely target the underlying drivers of symptoms.
Findings from the evaluation guide the development of a personalized program designed to support optimal tissue recovery and promote neuroplastic adaptation within the brain. By addressing the root causes of dysfunction, treatment is both efficient and highly individualized.
Rehabilitation may include a graded return to exercise to safely rebuild activity tolerance, manual therapies of the neck and regional areas, oculomotor retraining to improve eye movement control, and visual–vestibular integration to restore coordination between sensory systems. Interventions also emphasize postural stability and balance retraining, along with graded exposure strategies to reduce symptom provocation and eliminate maladaptive movement or behavioral patterns.
This targeted, systems-based approach ensures that recovery is not only symptom-driven, but focused on restoring full function and resilience.
