String Orchestra is the entry point into the Monta Vista Orchestra program. This class serves all incoming 9th-grade students who are not placed into Chamber Orchestra through the audition process, as well as students new to the orchestra program and those seeking an intermediate high school-level ensemble experience. Auditions are not required for entry.
Students in String Orchestra build upon foundational string technique and music literacy developed in middle school. Incoming students are expected to read music fluently in their instrument’s clef, maintain secure intonation in first position, and demonstrate familiarity with common major keys such as D, G, C, and A. The ensemble performs primarily Grade 3 repertoire, with an emphasis on tone development, bow control, ensemble awareness, and musical independence.
Recommended: Participation in Middle School Orchestra or private lessons.
Chamber Orchestra is the advanced string ensemble at Monta Vista High School and is open to students in grades 9-12 by audition. This ensemble represents the highest level of orchestral study within the program and provides a rigorous course of instruction for experienced string players.
Students in Chamber Orchestra perform advanced, college/professional-level repertoire and are expected to demonstrate a high degree of technical proficiency, musical independence, and ensemble awareness. In 2022, the Monta Vista Chamber Orchestra was selected as one of only six high school orchestras nationwide to perform at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, earning national recognition for artistic excellence.
