Part Fabrication Overview
During our FTC season, we use CAD to design custom parts for our robot. To make these parts, we have 4 main methods of fabrication. FDM 3D printing, SLA 3D printing, CNC machining, and CNC plasma cutting.
Method 1 - FDM 3D Printing
FDM Printing is our main method for making parts. It allows for fast and cheap prototyping and creation. The printer we use for making parts is the Qidi Plus 5. This printer has a massive build size, active chamber heating (for printing high-temp materials), and a hardened nozzle (which allows printing with carbon-fiber infused materials). This thing is a beast when it comes to printing large and strong parts. It can print advanced composites like PA12-CF out of the box. On top of this, it's almost half the price of it's closest competition, the Bambu Lab H2S! The Plus 5 is arguably the best printer for FTC teams.
Method 2 - SLA 3D Printing
Resin Printing is our least used option for creating parts, but it's very handy when we do use it. Resin printing allows for parts more precise then FDM prints will ever be. In addition to this, resin prints aren't limited by nozzle size, so you can make parts that are incredibly small. We use the Formlabs Form 4, which is the safest and most idiot-proof resin printer on the market.
