Beautiful City
Beautiful City
The song "Beautiful City" was written in 1972 for the movie "Godspell." The film was released the following year, and featured actors Victor Garber, David Haskell and Lynne Thigpen in leading roles. The movie was based on the off-Broadway musical of the same name, which opened in 1971.
"Beautiful City" has a special place in the hearts of Music Warehouse members. It was the first song the original group learned in four-part harmony. Over time, "Beautiful City" has been included in nearly every Spring Concert and graduation ceremony, as well as occasions of loss for someone close to the group.
In May 2001 Music Warehouse celebrated its Silver Anniversary at IU Auditorium. Below is video from the performance, featuring original costumes from the first 25 years of Music Warehouse.
Lyrics to "Beautiful City"
Come sing me sweet rejoicing
Come sing me love
We're not afraid of voicing
All the things
We're dreaming of
Oh, high and low,
And everywhere we go
We can build
A beautiful city
Yes we can
Oh yes we can
We can build
A beautiful city
Call it out
And call it the city of man
We don't need alabaster
We don't need chrome
We've got our special plaster
Take my hand (Take my hand)
I'll take you home (I'll take you home!)
We see nations rise
In each other's eyes (in each other's eyes!)
We can build (we can build)
A beautiful city (a beautiful city)
Yes we can
Oh yes we can
We can build (we can build)
A beautiful city (a beautiful city)
Call it out
And call it the city of man
Come sing me sweet rejoicing
Come sing me love
We're not afraid of voicing
All the things (all the things)
We're dreaming of (we're dreaming of)
Oh, high and low,
And everywhere we go (everywhere we go)
We can build (we can build)
A beautiful city (a beautiful city)
Yes we can
Oh yes we can
We can build (we can build)
A beautiful city (a beautiful city)
Call it out
And call it the city of man
