Dear Recruits:
As super musicians, many of us naturally and intrinsically demonstrate virtues without thinking about them. The purpose of identifying and affirming virtues is to reinforce them in our minds and actions and to transmit them to the people we interact with. There are seven virtues that play a vital role in our ability to model and instill ethical citizenship and musicianship to anyone you meet. As an enlisted SMA soldier these virtues are your solemn duty. Following these virtues will facilitate healthy group dynamics and a positive self concept while making, sharing and appreciating music easier.
The following virtues have been identified by SMA leadership as our core values. The virtues are respect, responsibility, courage, generosity, perseverance, honesty and integrity. We feel these seven virtues most clearly and simply contribute to our goal of creating more virtuous citizens, musicians, and positive contributors in our world.
Mr. U
We show respect by respecting the learning around us. We believe that people learn in many ways. Our learning should not interrupt someone else’s learning. To expedite a consistent and comfortable learning environment detailed expectations are reviewed and agreed upon prior to making music.
Super Musicians show responsibility by taking responsibility for their learning. We show responsibility by knowing our place in the music, being ready for our turn, and contributing to artistic elements like intonation, breath support, blend, dynamics, melodic shaping and more. Music responsibility is identified and discussed in music ensemble and especially during the early phases of music learning.
Super musicians show courage courage with their music choices. It takes courage to share your music creations amongst your peers, to sing alone or to learn a new instrument. It also takes courage to defend your music and creative choices. It can sometimes be risky to be a musician-soldier. There is courage needed at times to to be silent and courage needed to take a lead role on stage. The bravery in being a musician is in trying something new. The reward is accomplishing something great that at first seemed impossible.
The act of giving without anticipating anything in return. As Super Musicians we believe there is no greater gift than time. Being a super musician takes time! Practicing alone or with friends for days, weeks, or months on pieces that may last a few minutes is one of the most generous acts one can engage in. Anticipate that when your music superpowers develop and strengthen you will be called upon to help all others who know less than you.
Super Musicians never give up. Even in the face of great difficulty, challenge or obstacle, our actions are positive and lead us towards achieving personal, musical, and group goals.
Honesty is a part of our Creed. We “make and share music without any pretense.” To be honest about our music abilities, aptitude and experiences can seem scary at times and is absolutely critical in creating an open an peaceful setting to share music. When we demand honesty. We denounce know-it-alls, blowhards and showoffs. It is not possible for one recruit to know everything about music and music performance. With a strong sense of teamwork, our army can make great progress, achieve success and foster dependable musicianship!
Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody’s watching. We live in a world that at times seems faceless and with less and less accountability and consequence. In our online lives we have access to personal images, sound recordings, videos of millions of musicians we will never know. We are responsible for our music and entertainment choices. We are responsible for viewing/commenting/sharing in ways that demonstrate empathy, respect and appreciation for others through all our personal and online interactions.
