While we toured the Dvorak, Smetana, and Janacek museums, one of the questions we focused on was how the museums contributed to the myth of the composer and their legends. One of our readings, "The Mother of All the Arts," talks about the idea of myths giving legitimacy to society, and these myths of famous Czech composers help emphasize the idea of a uniquely Czech musical culture. This is important because after years of communism and being ruled by others, the Czechs want to establish their own identity. We also talked about the ritual of musicking and how it changes with different musical experiences.
