Our goal was to discover and learn about Czech Music while abroad for four weeks in Prague. This site serves as your guide to our observations and recommendations (add something here).
Part of our class culture was to begin every session with a song by a Czech artist. We created a collaborative playlist for these and added songs as we encountered them.

Hi everyone! I’m Adriana and I am the program coordinator at CET Prague. It has been so much fun accompanying this lovely group on their musical adventures around the Czech Republic. What I love about music is that it connects you with people and the whole world. And at the same time (headphones addict here!) I love how music pulls me from everyone and everything when I feel like it. Just like travelling, right?? Keep listening and keep exploring!

Hello. My name is Noah Craig. I chose to take this class in order to widen a field of study that I was not so familiar with, but the syllabus also said wandering and getting lost was part of the grade, so how could I not take it. This class was very enjoyable because I got to experience music, which is so important in the United States, in a foreign country, where I barely understood the language.

Hello! I chose to take Musical Cultures in Prague to understand music in another light. I mainly listen to rap/hip-hop, and learning about classical music has widened my appreciation. I have not only learned about how music makes you feel, but also how music brings us together. With the abundance of great composers from the Czech Republic, it is impossible not to be in awe of their work. Living in one of the most beautiful cities is a good side effect.

Hey! I'm Nate and I took this class because I have always loved learning about music. I was in a jazz band in high school and I jumped at the opportunity to take another music class since I haven't done much since then. I had also heard of Prague's rich music history and thought it would be a no-brainer to take a class focused on their music culture. I'm so glad to have been in this class and to have had an experience as amazing as this one!

Hi all! Im Emma :) I chose to take this class because of the adventure it presented. Leaving the country, learning about a field of study I was unfamiliar to, and a syllabus that described wandering for cultural emersion paired with musical excursions.. .who wouldn't want to take a class like that? This class presented a wide variation of music and learning which was not only rewarding but fun! I am so blessed to have been able to experience Czech culture by learning about a monumental part of their history, music.

Hi! I'm Emma and I took this class because I thought it would allow me to explore the city more while I'm here and connect to the music and culture of Prague! It was really exciting to be able to explore so many little nooks and crannies of the city and to have something specific to focus on about the culture as a whole. I loved being able to do so many different excursions and witness so many different types of music!

Hi! I'm Catie, and I took this class because I was really interested in the learning methods we would be using to analyze the musical cultures of Prague. It excited me because it felt very anthropological! Getting to observe and reflect on a specific aspect of another culture for an extended period of time is a unique and amazing experience, especially when it comes to something as exciting and important as music.

I decided to take this class in particular because I thought this class would be able to broaden my perspective on music and expose me to Czech Music, and what better way than to learn at the locations where historical music events took place? Having had Dr. Turner before, I knew his style of teaching would connect with me and allow discussions that would further my growth mindset.

Hi! Music Cultures in Prague seemed like a perfect fit for me as I wished to become a more well-rounded 'student of music.' I have always deeply appreciated music but was curious how my knowledge would apply in a foreign country. As the group explored Czech music every morning in class, we learned that there are more commonalities to American music than we thought. Moving forward, we will apply the principles of music and identity inherited from this course and continue exploring musical concepts unknown to us. Měj hezký den!

Hi everyone! I'm Regan and I took this class because as a business major I wanted to analyze the world through a different perspective. I knew Prague was a city full of culture and art so being able to see the city through a musical lens was going to be a unique experience that would provide me a better understanding of not only Czech culture but individual identity and music.

I have been interested in City-as-Text™ pedagogy since I first encountered it at the Honors International Faculty Institute (Texas Christian University) in 2019. When I was offered to teach the course in Prague, it seemed a perfect opportunity to create a full CAT experience. Accordingly, we studied musical cultures through participation, observation, interviews, and discussion.

Hello there! My name is Levi and despite having a good amount of musical experience with violin, piano, and choir, I had not listened to much variety of music nor have I been able to participate in many musical activities prior to this class. I joined this class because I wanted to widen my musical experience and think more critically about music.
