You are part of a Global America Investigation Team.
Your 3-week mission:
Trace the diaspora of folk and popular music traditions to the U.S. from world areas.
Analyze the survival, transformation, and hybridization of those musical practices and their impact on American popular music.
Explore how and why American music is globalized, the role of the Internet and mass media in this process, and the ways in which local cultures around the world adapt American music to their own society and traditions.
Travel to a new world region each week by completing the lesson and tasks.
To complete your 3-week mission: Earn 100 points and submit 3 checkpoints, one at the end of each week (Wednesday, 11:59 PM).
Week 1, Jan. 2-8: Introductions, “American” music
Week 2, Jan. 9-15: International influence on music in the US
Week 3, Jan. 16-22: “American” music’s global influence
Each week's lesson will be linked at the top right of this screen (ie: "Week 1"). As of now, no lessons are available to view.
It's impossible to cover the whole world in three weeks, so it's up to you to explore further. The lessons provide an introduction, then you explore sub-categories through small research projects. You could research music and social movements, women's rights, racial equity, music and religious practices, music and media, etc.
Visit the "Quickstart Guide" tab [not available yet] for information on how to complete tasks each week.
