My goal for this piece was to make it linear. I wanted the sounds to make you think of going through the time of day. The majority of the piece is a recording of the water dripping from the fountain. Then, the piece transitions into street noises, such as cars driving by. You can clearly hear as soon as the car approaches and as it drives away. By the end of the piece, you can hear crickets chirping, making you think it is night. So, the piece brings you through noises happening one by one throughout the day. The dripping of the water noises makes you think of the daytime and sunshine while the slow cars moving by with the nigh time crickets represents the night. Therefore, this piece is linear. You start with the morning of the beautiful day and end with a subtle night time sound.
My intention for this piece, was to create a subtle beat with natural sounds you probably hear every day, and a few unnatural sounds as well. Over most of this piece, I used the natural sound of cicadas to create my basic beat to base the rest of the sounds from. The recording I got of them cropped perfectly to sound like a beat you can really follow in a song. Throughout the piece, I wanted to incorporate basic sounds we hear as we walk around our college campus. For instance, the first sound introduced on top of the cicada beat is chairs being pushed in and out, as if to give the impression that the school day has started, and the students are busy. We hear foot traffic, pool-like sounds, and more man-made sounds that create unique beats. However, I also incorporated wind sounds, to remind the audience that we are outside for the duration of this listening experience, and to show that what they take for granted every day is beautiful music. Both tail ends of this piece create the same effect of students moving about the day, until the day ends, and all we are left with are the singing bugs and the singing wind.
This week I composed my own piece of music. I used some of the sounds we gathered from around campus from the week prior. My piece starts off with a constant sound of bugs buzzing that we were able to record outside in the trees. I mixed in footsteps and people walking into my piece to make it sound more like an average day on campus. I also added in the shaking of the umbrella outside of Slane which sounds almost like a shaker. I then added in the sound of cars driving by on the road. You hear the tires drag across the road. I really like the effect the car had on the piece. Im really pleased with how my piece turned out.
