Insects are a diverse group of small, six-legged arthropods that play a crucial role in ecosystems worldwide. They have three body segments (head, thorax, and abdomen) and often possess wings, allowing them to fly. Insects are highly adaptable and can be found in various habitats, from forests to deserts. They serve as pollinators for many plants, decomposers, and essential food sources for other animals. While some insects can be harmful as pests, many are beneficial, aiding in agriculture and maintaining ecological balance. Their remarkable diversity and ecological importance make them one of the most successful and abundant animal groups on Earth.
The insects in this gallery were mostly obtained in the Mabini Campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines via pitfall traps, sweeping net method, and light traps. The second-year biology students also included some specimens from their home cities and provinces, all within the Luzon Island. The contents of this gallery range from insects under the orders Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Odonata, Blattodea, Diptera, Dermaptera, Hemiptera, Mantodea, and Hymenoptera.
