MPE-CAS Journal Club

on Star and Planet Formation

My colleague Maria-Jose (Cote) Maureira and I are organizing the MPE-CAS Journal Club on star and planet formation. We discuss the newest papers on ArXiv for half an hour every week. The format is very informal: papers are projected on the screen, and each paper is discussed for ~10-20 min. You are very welcome to present your newest paper or join the discussion, especially if you work in MPE/MPA/ESO!

Place: Online via Zoom

Time: 15:00-15:30 on Wednesdays

How to join (feel free to contact me if you have any questions):

  • Sign-up for an account on the benty-fields website (which is amazingly made by two astronomers). You can choose the fields you are interested in (e.g. stars and planets), and the website will show you a list of papers on ArXiv every day (optional email reminders).

  • Request to join the MPE-CAS journal club (see Figure 1 below). This will be approved by Maria-Jose or me. You will receive automatic reminder emails about the next meeting 1 day and 1h before it happens.

  • After you are a member of the MPE-CAS journal club, you can VOTE for papers (see Figure 2 below). The voted papers will appear on the journal club page. The voting is anonymous, so there is no pressure to present the paper if you just want to vote for it. In addition to voting papers on the daily ArXiv, you can also vote for older papers by searching for a paper in the Benty-search page on the website.

  • If you want to present a paper, you can click the VOLUNTEER button on the list of papers on the journal club page (see Figure 3 below). We encourage you to present the paper if you are one of the co-authors or know about the paper already. The goal of the presenter is to tell people why is this interesting, and what is the main result. For example, you can just show us the abstract and some important plots in the paper. No slides needed - the organizer will project the paper on the screen, so you can just come and talk. The presentation can be very short (1min) or longer (~15min) depending on how familiar you are with the paper. Since we already read papers anyway, hopefully this won't take up much more time. Maria-Jose and I will make an effort to prepare for 1-2 papers each week. If we don't have time to discuss all the papers, we will just push forward to next week. If there are no interesting papers to talk about, we will just end the meeting early.
