I am forever grateful that I was given the opportunity to teach these wonderful kids. They were not the best students you had hoped for in terms of academic achievement, but their attitudes especially towards me were commendable.
I remember scolded them for coming late to class two weeks right after I started my practicum. It was a stressful Friday morning. But never have I imagined that that moment would be the last time I was able to be mad at these people.
People say, teachers inspire students. Well in my case, it's the other way round. They inspired me to be the best teacher. Their encouragements and supports were vividly shown when they were always hyped up for my class and they were always responsive to me.
Sometimes, those little things matter the most. Small to them, gigantic to me.
Now how do I put it in words? These kids were transitioning from being a kid to a teenager. They needed time to adapt to their new surrounding which was full of yet-to-be-discovered challenges.
They started off extremely passive. As time went by, the boys found their ways around me. So they became extremely noisy and aggressive. Nonetheless, the girls stayed the same.
This bunch set me no ordinary tasks. I had to reach 200% of my mental capacity to teach and be patient with these kids. Nevertheless, I gained a new perspective about being a teacher. It is not all sweet and dreamy. With every road, there is a thorny path lies ahead. Yet at the end of the road, a shining future awaits. And he who perseveres, succeeds.
8th MELTA International Conference on English Language Education 2018
This was my first experience ever presenting research paper on a conference. My co-writer, Shauqi (bottom-left) and I produced an Action Research paper entitled Exploring the Impact of Slang Words on ESL Learners' Writing Skills: A Case Study of SMK Taman Melati, WPKL.
Limericks and Haikus (2016); ISBN 978-967-11910-1-9
Back when I was in my first year of degree, I took a course called Introduction to Literature. This subject was taught by my late professor, Prof. Dr. Sayyid Ajmal Al-Aidrus . He was a man full of ideas. He proposed that we compiled our Limericks and Haikus and made it a book.
