This section explores Afiq's personal experience and reflections on his involvement in TESS IIUM
Module Designer
I have actively joined many English Camps during my degree years both locally and internationally. Most of the time, I was given the responsibility to design the learning modules. From the experiences, I have developed a highly creative and critical thinking. This is because in order to design a learning module, a lot of factors need to be considered. Things such as: the students' demographics, level of proficiency, suitability of the materials, the facilitators' preferences, and a lot more.

My expertise in module designing was also recognised by the university. I was approached personally by IIUM Students' Representative Council to help them design some learning modules for their English teaching projects.

Soleh English was a collaboration programme between TESS IIUM and Akademi Sinergi Ikhlas. It aimed to incorporate Islamic values and teaching in the teaching of English to young kids. At the same time, it also acted as an awareness campaign to Muslim parents that learning English does not necessarily contradict to Islamic teaching.
These pictures were taken when I was promoting Soleh English with Mohd Ridzuan Abdul Ghani (Coach Ridz) from Akademi Sinergi Ikhlas at IKIM.fm radio station. It was a remarkable experience as this was my first time broadcasting an event nationwide.
Programme Manager
TESL Unity Run 2018; Victory in Diversity was the highlight of my degree years. I managed to collaborate with two TESL societies from two different public universities; Universiti Malaya & Universiti Teknologi MARA. Together, we came up with an inter-varsity programme, a sports event. This was the first collaboration ever between the three of us; IIUM, UM and UiTM. Hence, "Unity Run" was used as a symbolic of our unity.
Managing this big-scale event was a bit of everything. Exhilarating, terrifying, confusing, you name it. Managing this bunch of people was not an easy task. Each with their own working styles and preferences.
In addition, this event took a toll on my mental health to an extent where I would be really anxious to answer phone calls and even shivered whenever I heard my notification chimed. There was a period where the committees would argue and gave the cold shoulder to each other. This was the biggest challenge that I had to face. More so, it involved three different universities.
However, we managed to get it through the end. TESL Unity Run 2018 was a HUGE SUCCESS! Through this programme I learnt that we cannot force people to follow our working pace. Let people do their work the way they feel comfortable, as long as the task is done within the given time. That will be more effective and productive.

TESL Theatre Day is an annual event, held to celebrate first and final year TESL students who are taking Literature subjects. This event acts as a platform for the students to be evaluated by the lecturers, and at the same time, entertain nearby secondary school students with their amazing performances.
My history with TESL Theatre Day goes way back from 2015 where I was a mere catering committee. In 2016, I was given the opportunity and responsibility to lead the management team of TESL Theatre Day.
In 2018, it was my batch's turn to perform in TESL Theatre Day. This time around I was no longer a part of the management team, instead, I was leading the production team. As a theatre novice, I surely was struggling to understand the proper theatrical procedures. From planning to scriptwriting to vocal and emotion training to practising, there were a lot of new things that I learnt.
Above all, it is crucial to respect other people's time and energy. In order to produce a great performance, everyone should play their part responsibly and respectfully.
Frisbee Coach
I was entrusted to be the coach for the Kulliyyah of Education, IIUM frisbee team during an Inter-Kulliyyah Sports Festival 2018. This was my very first time coaching people sports. Training people are not as easy as I thought. A lot of sacrifices and preparations needed to be made for this competition. We had our ups and downs. Nevertheless, we had fun!
