Heat Resilient Cities

With the global climate change, heat stress in urban settings is a growing concern for cities around the world. Heat stress poses serious health problems, both physical and mental, especially in disadvantaged communities.

We are developing innovative portable or distributed sensing technonologies to capture the mean radiant temperature, a key indicator of thermal environments influencing humans.

We are also developing and field testing artifical shades that take advantage of sub-ambient cooling capability for superwhite paints in collaboration with reseachers at Materials Science and Engineering Department, phase change (solid-liquid and liquid-vapor) materials, and bio-inspired cooling devices.

Our group is part of the UCLA Grand Challenge project, "Heat Resilient LA."
