Tonight was a special evening as we came together as a pack to celebrate the origins of Cub Scouting, and also to celebrate our AOL den as they earned their Arrow of Light awards and crossed over (~graduated) to Scouts BSA (formerly "Boy Scouts"). A handful of these boys have been together since Kindergarten as Lions, and many more joined through the years. As the boys crossed over, they received a neckerchief from the Troop they chose to join and will attend their meetings from here forward. That said, we know many of them will be back to visit 121 to help, to teach, and to share stories of their continued Scouting adventures!
At this weekly den meeting, we had our Lion Den (kindergarteners) engineer designs to fling then catch a small ball. They were so excited to show these creations to the AOL den. If you didn't know, Scouts can be started in Kindergarten now, but if you're older, don't fret-- boys and girls can join any time Kinder through high school.
It's that time of year again, when all Scouts vie for the First Place award in the Pinewood Derby races! So much fun was had by all, Scouts and adults alike - the races were fast and the twinkie cars delicious!
Here's yet another of those cool things that being a Scout enables you to do. Tonight, our AOL Den visited The Facility Makerspace at Edmonds Community College and tested various Pinewood Derby car designs in their wind tunnel to see which would give them the most aerodynamic edge to their upcoming race. Not only that, but they were given a tour of The Facility's entire makerspace of 3D printers and laser cutters, metal fabrication and prototyping - I can imagine many of our scouts will be seen in this building one day! A big thank you to The Facility, especially David Voetmann, Director of The Facility, and Dr. William Hamp of ECC's Engineering Department.
Our AOL (Arrow of Light) Den took a weekend excursion down near Mt. Rainier to BSA Camp Sheppard for Winter Camp. Scouts played in the snow, hiked in the snow, did science in the snow, shot pellet guns in the snow, did archery in the snow, and even put on three short skits in the snow. One thing we didn't have enough snow for: tubing! Next year, boys! Luckily, the cabins were warm and the food was always delicious.
At tonight's den meetings, our Bear Den was SUPER excited to begin work on their Whittling Chip certification (to be able to use a pocketknife at Scout campouts). Here you can see them beginning to practice safe knife handling with plastic knives as they begin carving bars of soap.
After our flag ceremony and many awards, Pack 121 Scouts learned about the science behind what makes a good Pinewood Derby car, looking at variables such as friction, weight, and overall design. Scouts will soon be building their own Pinewood Derby cars for races in January.
Pack 121 participated in Mill Creek's annual Santa parade, sporting light up tents, a pack snowman, and Scout cheer!
Five scouts from our AOL den went to check out Troop 18 as a potential troop to join in the spring. Scouts and their adults prepared for a cool night camping, a day hike around Camp Pigott, and lots of gaga ball! Scouts joined their older scout hosts for a full scout-led cookout and campfire. Despite the deluge the second night, all emerged from their tents happy and ready to do it again!
Two of our scouts had their faces painted this evening in earning their Bobcat badge, along with a number of adventure belt loops, pins, and even a few shooting sports activity awards handed out. Scouts then rotated through three stations to prepare for a pack hike coming up on the weekend after Thanksgiving. They brought their packed day packs and compared what they packed to our Cubmaster Nick's pack, learning what's needed for a cold-weather hike. From Den Leader Rich, they learned about emergency prepareness - how to prepare if something goes wrong. Finally, with Assistant Cubmaster Jesse and Popcorn Kernel Lindsay, scouts made a trail snack (one of our six essentials: food!) out of various dried fruits, chocolate, and nuts for those who wanted them. We are now fully prepared to do our best on our hike!
Our pack honored our Veterans today by walking with fellow scouts during Mill Creek's Veterans Day parade. The city produced a nice video of the event - you can see us for a brief second here at 1:50.
Our scouts also conducted the flag ceremonies at Monroe and Jefferson Elementary Schools, and St. Mary Magdalen's School.
Thank you, Veterans, for your service! We salute you!
Our Lion Den scouted around Monroe Elementary, where we all meet every Tuesday, to do a service project of picking up trash around the campus. Armed with raincoats for our PNW weather, flashlights, gloves, and trash bags, scouts had a great time hunting for things they could pick up. Way to go, Lions!
Our Arrow of Light (AOL) Webelos trekked up to Fire Mountain Scout Camp this weekend for an overnight, then meet with local troops to see which they would like to join this spring. These fifth grade scouts have reached the end of their Cub Scout journey and are ready to move onto Scouts BSA (formerly called Boy Scouts) to continue their scouting adventure. Our Webelos met with a variety of scout troops learning about fire making, knot tying, pioneering, as well as doing the regular Fire Mountain experiences of archery, BB guns, and rock wall climbing.
At our first pack meeting, we welcomed our new Lion Den, had three new scouts earn their Bobcat badge, along with many new adventure belt loops and pins handed out. Scouts did an engineering challenge of making a creepy eyeball launcher out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a plastic spoon, then launching these eyeballs at safe targets. Scouts also played a "How many candy corns are in the jar?" guessing game, with two scouts (brother and sister) guessing the same and sharing the sweet prize.
Pack 121 serves both Jefferson and Monroe Elementary Schools in Everett, WA, and we are actively recruiting for those interested in scouting. Want to see what scouting is all about? Ask us when you see us at a back to school event, or email us at mtbakerpack121@gmail.com.
We just sold our last physical bag of popcorn today! Our scouts worked so hard this September running shifts at Safeway, Cabelas, The Big Box Store, and many others, not to mention door to door wagon sales or online orders with friends and family. We are proud of our scouts for raising the funds so our pack can continue to offer the scouting program we know and love for another year. And just so you know, we are still taking online orders into October, so if you haven't placed your order yet, contact one of our scouts today!
Scouts visited our local emergency command center to learn all about how emergency response is coordinated for the county. Scouts came away with new knowledge on what happens behind the scenes with our first responders, as well as a bag of goodies to extend their learning at home.
Scouts had a blast building paper airplanes, shaking up film canister poppers and watching them fly, as well as a new addition this year: pool noodle rockets! Scouts also enjoyed watching the adults fire off the big rockets, then chasing them down before landing. We were all so busy we forgot to take pictures! A great night for scouts and for those interested in scouting to check out our pack.
Returning scouts to the pack met today at our Popcorn Kernel's house for a refresher on the the ins and outs of selling popcorn, then went through the neighborhood and sold a LOT of popcorn! Way to go, scouts!
