LIEUTENANT COLONEL
Officer Force Structure: The officer force structure is comprised of three distinct and separate tiers. The tiers are Company Grade Officer (CGO) and include grades O-1 thru O-3, Field Grade Officer (FGO) comprising of grades O-4 thru O-6, and General Officer (GO), with grades O-7 thru O-10. FGOs are expected to have mastered CGO responsibilities. Officers should understand the enlisted structure, duty titles, and responsibilities within their organizations. (AFH 36-2618, chapter 7).
Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col): Lt Col may serve in roles such as Operations Officer, Squadron Commander, Group Commander or Staff Officer Wing or NGB. FGOs begin taking on larger roles within Squadron, Group, and Wing.
Commanders: hold the authority and responsibility to act to and to lead their units to accomplish the mission. Air Force Commanders have threefold mission execution responsibilities: primary mission, Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) readiness, and mission assurance command and control. Commanders must apply good risk management, accept risk and manage resources to adjust the timing, quality, and quantity of their support to meet the requirements of the supported commander (AFI 1-2, para 3).
