Class Rules
There are 5 classroom rules that help us maintain a courteous and safe classroom environment so that everyone feels comfortable:
Stay on task
Use your manners
Follow directions
Take responsibility
Mind your own business
As much as possible, students will be provided with natural consequences when poor choices have been made. In order to help themselves gain greater independence in problem solving social situations, students are encouraged to use “I messages” when they are conflicting with other students. For example: “I feel hurt when people call me silly names.” In some cases, students will be asked to fill out “Think Sheets” which will then be sent home for parent/guardian signatures.
Attendance, Phone Calls and Messages
The answering machine is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you know your child will be absent, please call and leave a message so that it helps alleviate some of the phone calls for the Safe Arrival program. If your child will be leaving for an appointment in the middle of the school day, please let us know and we will try our best to send the student to the office prior to your arrival.
Scent Free Policy
Port Guichon is a scent free building. Signs are posted at the front office as a reminder to all who enter the building.
Food/Peanut Free Classroom
Our classroom is a nut-free zone. We do have some minor allergies, so the children have been asked to NOT share food.
At times, students celebrate birthdays by bringing in special treats for the class. If your child has any special dietary concerns, please let me know in advance. Parents may send in alternative treats that we can keep on hand for such occasions. Due to Covid-19, the school district has requested that we no longer allow sharing of food. Please do not send any treats.
Students are encouraged to bring their water bottles to school. They are allowed to keep them in the classroom throughout the instructional day as long as they are not a distraction and that the bottles contain plain water (juice/milk are allowed during snack and lunch times to minimize the risk of spills on our learning!). A water re-fill station is available at school, but it’s best to bring a filled bottle in the morning.
Being Green
We are a Green school. Some of the initiatives that help us be environmentally friendly:
Turning off the lights at lunch
Composting
Recycling paper, paper towels, juice boxes and plastic containers
Field Trips
A number of field trips are currently being planned for the school year. It is my hope that we will be able to go on at least at few each term. A survey will be sent home in the coming weeks to find out whether parents/guardians would like for their child to participate, as additional costs will be associated to these trips. We will also frequently require parent/guardian volunteers to help drive us to and from the locations and to supervise.
Birthdays
If you would like to send invitations for a birthday party, we would be happy to hand out invitations if everyone is invited. If you have decided on inviting a select group of students, please contact those families outside of school so that we may eliminate any possible feelings of being left out.
Parent or Guardian Visits to School
All those who enter the school must report to the office before proceeding to any other area of the school. Even parents/guardians who have notified the school by note or phone must report to the office. This is very important if we are to keep track of all students in our care.
Toys
We encourage students to keep their toys and valuables at home. However, if they are brought to school, they need to be kept in their backpacks.
