Reading
Reading and writing are not only taught as separate entities, but they are also integrated into most of our other academic subject areas.
Guided Reading – at least twice a week, students will meet with me or another adult to practice decoding, fluency and comprehension of various genres of text. They will be grouped according to their independent reading levels.
Reader’s Workshop – whole group lessons that target decoding, fluency, text features and use of reading comprehension. Our focus will be on reading fluency and decoding strategies.
Reading Comprehension – We will be utilizing the Reading Powers program, which teaches students about connections, questions, inferences, visualization and transformations.
Writing
Our class will be using 6+1 traits of writing to develop our writing skills. I will be providing regular mini-lessons that target the 6 main areas with a greater focus on content rather than conventions. Please see the Write Traits section for more information.
