Have a hole on your property

Do you have a cave entrance, hole, or sink that you would like researched? The MSS is happy to assist landowners in exploration, mapping or research of potential caves on their property.This is a free service to landowners

Liability Concerns

Have a cave and are worried about liability? The Minnesota Sportman's Law covers cave exploration! This is a direct result of the MSS working with the legislature to get the Sportman's Law amended.

Bats

Bats are a common yet misunderstood mammal. Minnesota bats eat insects which can carry diseases such as West Nile.. More information about bats can be found at Bat Conservation International , a non profit group working to protect bats. Bats should never be disturbed when caving. This is even more important during hibernation. Many caves are off limits during winter months to protect hibernating bats (so they can continue to eat mosquitos the following summer).

Sinkholes

Sinkholes are common in SE Minnesota. A sinkhole is a direct connection to groundwater, as such anything draining into a sinkhole will quickly appear in your drinking water. A sinkhole is not a magical hole where trash and chemicals can be dumped. The MSS is activily working on excavating several sinkholes that were used as trash dumps in the late 1800's. The trash is being moved to a properly designed sanitary landfill.
