Lack of or misrepresentation of non-Western-centric holidays in Canadian schools as well as a lack of access to reputable and authentic representation in resources.
If something is outside of your context and purvue it is impossible to know the value and rich educational opportunities involved.
As the world becomes more interconnected, many students have diverse cultural backgrounds and celebrate different holidays than are generally taught in schools in British Columbia.
Sometimes a short video is presented or a colouring activity is presented for Diwali or Chinese New Year, but, usually, it rarely goes beyond that.
Students in the classroom can feel seen and participate in teaching their classmates about how they celebrate with their families and feel like their voices, and cultures, deserve to be heard.
The Clear Solution
An app that provides authentic resources for holidays all over the world for teachers to build community within their classrooms.
A tool that helps teachers to involve their students more in the classroom and helps all students learn about other cultures and practices. Bridging cultures and experiences in your classrooms.
Nathalie Stokes is the founder and brains behind the "cultural calendar".
After spending most of her life as an expat and being exposed to different countries and cultures by living within them, when she returned to Canada she found a large discrepancy between which holidays were celebrated in the schools she worked in. During one of her internships, she was told that there was "no need" to teach about Chinese New Year as it was "only three students who celebrate[d] it". She had to jump through hoops to prove the value of educating our students about different holidays and the students who celebrated it were thrilled to be represented.
Whilst teaching in international schools in Hanoi, Vietnam, it was clear that the only holidays that the students were exposed to were Anglo-Saxon holidays and the local holidays in Vietnam. If you research activities to do for holidays the vast majority will demonstrate Christmas, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Valentine's Day. Though these are important and are celebrated around the world, it is Nathalie's goal to bridge the gap and provide a resource for teachers and beyond to involve the various cultures within their community in their practice.

There are far too few resources for cultures outside of the Western World. There are such rich histories and celebrations that are left out of the classroom because it is "more effort" or the resources are unreliable and made by those outside of those cultures.
