Reading is so important at any age, but especially at the elementary level. Reading improves students' ability to spell and decode, increases their vocabulary, and helps students become better speakers. These are all skills that students will use for the rest of their lives, so I try to encourage students to free read as much as possible.
Good literature is important because it can help students develop their perspective of the world. It is especially important to monitor children's reading materials at a young age and ensure that the texts they are consuming are unbiased and avoid stereotypes to try and quell subconscious biases from developing in their young minds.
