Cleaning 101
All INTERNS are responsible for ensuring all of the ultrasounds in the department are stored in their appropriate location, cleaned, and plugged in at the beginning of every shift.
It is the responsibility of the person performing the ultrasound to ensure that the machine and probes are prepared, cleaned, and disinfected appropriately after each use.
All probes must be cleaned before and after use.
Please use ONLY the following to clean the probes:
• Sani-Cloth gray top wipes
• Clorox hydrogen peroxide wipes (green top)
Do NOT use alcohol wipes or the bleach wipes (blue top)
Cleaning Demonstration
Point-of-Care Ultrasound Cleaning Protocols
Wear gloves whenever cleaning or handling probes
Thoroughly wipe down transducer and cord using the AF3 wipes (Gray Top) prior to and after using it with a patient. The surface should remain wet for 3 minutes and then allow to air dry.
If the Gray Top wipes are unavailable, may use hydrogen peroxide wipes but DO NOT use bleach wipes as they may damage the probe
Do not submerge in water
All vascular procedures require a probe cover (peripheral cover for peripheral IVs, central line cover for central lines; do NOT use tegaderms). Clean probe as above before and after use.
