Global Lesson – Greek Theatre
Teacher: Lacee Thomason

Date When Taught:
Essential Question: What does theatre look like for the Ancient Greek times?
Title of Lesson: Greek Theatre
Target Age: 9-11
Time Needed: 2 Class Periods (1 hour each)
Materials Needed:
Laptop (for teacher)
Mask Making Materials
Print outs (attached below)
Colored pencils
Scissors
PowerPoint for Greek theatre
Print out copies of King Midas and the Golden Touch
Standards and Goals:
4.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of social, historical, and cultural contexts in which it was created.
Clarifying Objective:
4.CU.1.2 Understand how theatre arts have affected, and are reflected in, the culture, traditions, and history.
Specific Goal:
Students will identify the origin of Greek theatre and explain the uses of masks in theatre.
Social Skills Objective:
Students will collaborate in creating a mask after learning about Greek Theatre
Procedures:
Day 1
Students will come in, sit in their assigned seats, and begin the bell work that will be projected on the screen. (5 minutes)
Once the students have worked for five minutes after the bell has rung, we will discuss their answers as a group. (5 minutes)
Students will then be lead through a presentation on Greek Theatre (attached below). (20 minutes)
After the PowerPoint, students will be given instructions on how to create one of three masks. (5 minutes)
Students will then color and cut out one of the three mask options. (25 minutes)
Closure for Day 1:

Students will hand in their masks on their way out of my classroom as an exit ticket.
Procedures:
Day 2
Students will come in, sit in their assigned seats, and wait for further instructions. (5 minutes)
Once the students are quiet, they will be handed a short Greek myth and assigned roles in groups. (5 minutes)
Students will then read through the script as a group (attached below). (30 minutes)
Groups will then be asked to think-pair-share with another group (10 minutes)
Students will be given the last ten minutes to discuss and write three important takeaways from the myth as a group. (10 minutes)
Closure for Day 2:
Greek Theatre Exit
Groups will hand in their takeaways as their exit ticket one at a time.

Global Lesson – Asian Theatre

Essential Question: What does theatre look like for Asian cultures?
Title of Lesson: Asian Theatre
Target Age: 9-11
Time Needed: 2 Class Periods (1 hour each)
Materials Needed:
Laptop (for teacher)
Device for students
PowerPoint for Asian theatre
Kabuki template
Colored pencils
Standards and Goals:
4.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of social, historical, and cultural contexts in which it was created.
Clarifying Objective:
4.CU.1.2 Understand how theatre arts have affected, and are reflected in, the culture, traditions, and history.
Specific Goal:
Students will identify the elements of Asian theatre and explain at least one type of performing used in during this time.
Social Skills Objective:
Students will collaborate in groups
Procedures:
Day 1
Students will come in, sit in their assigned seats, and begin the bell work that will be projected on the screen. (5 minutes)
Once the students have worked for five minutes after the bell has rung, we will discuss their answers as a group. (5 minutes)
Students will then be lead through a presentation and watch videos on Asian Theatre (attached below). (20 minutes)
After the PowerPoint, students will be given instructions on a group research activity that will extend two class periods. (5 minutes)
Students will then get in predetermined groups and research kabuki makeup and what colors and types of styles mean. This may carry over into the beginning of the next class. (25 minutes)
Closure for Day 1:
Asian Theatre Research Exit
Students (one from each group) will digitally share their research with me as their exit ticket.
Procedures:
Day 2
Students will come in, sit in their assigned seats, and wait for further instructions. (5 minutes)
Once the students are quiet, they will be instructed to go back into their groups from the day prior. (5 minutes)
Students will then be told to finish their research in the next fifteen minutes. (15 minutes)
Groups will then be asked to use this research to create a kabuki makeup look on the handout provided below. (30 minutes)
Students will be given the last five minutes to share the added research with me (one student per group) and every student have their activity sheets ready to hand in. (5 minutes)

Groups will hand in their kabuki makeup sheets as their exit ticket one at a time.

Global Lesson – Shakespearean Theatre

Essential Question: What does theatre look like in Shakespearean times?
Title of Lesson: Shakespearean Theatre
Target Age: 9-11
Time Needed: 1 Class Period (1 hour)
Materials Needed:
Laptop (for teacher)
PowerPoint for Shakespearean theatre
Handouts (attached at the bottom of the document)
Standards and Goals:
4.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of social, historical, and cultural contexts in which it was created.
Clarifying Objective:
4.CU.1.2 Understand how theatre arts have affected, and are reflected in, the culture, traditions, and history.
Specific Goal:
Students will identify the elements of Shakespearean theatre and explain at least one type of genre performed during this time.
Social Skills Objective:
Students will collaborate in groups
Procedures:
Day 1
Students will come in, sit in their assigned seats, and wait for further instruction. (5 minutes)
Once the bell sounds, I will start our game “Taylor Swift vs Shakespeare”. Students will write their answers in their journals. (10 minutes)
Before the PowerPoint, students will be given instructions on completing the pre-assessment which is to be done before we watch the video. (5 minutes)
Students will then be led through a presentation on Shakespeare with a Think-Pair-Share video discussion (attached below). (20 minutes)
Students will then use the remainder of class to use a Shakespeare insult sheet and write a two-page scene. (20 minutes)

Students will hand in their scenes which will be used in an end of year showcase.
