What is the controversy around equal rights? The United States is well known for society's constant fight for equal rights. There are two different groups in this country: majorities and minorities. Minorities tend to be the group fighting for equal rights. Minorities in this country include individuals with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, and even certain religious groups. Although there are laws against discrimination, this country is so divided that these minority groups are not free from it. These groups are susceptible of being targeted by members of the majority. This act is called a hate crime.
Why are equal rights important? Equal rights are important because it ensures that every single person, no matter their health status, sexuality, skin color, or religion, has the exact same rights as everyone else. Everybody deserves a voice and to live as they want to live without a fear of being who they are.
