Conference Presentation
Reflection
I would like to thank Professor W. C. Chuang for recommending me to participate in this CSME symposium, which allowed me to gain presentation experience before my oral examination and to hone my on-the-spot responses during the Q&A session with the examiners. It also helped me assess whether my preparation, including my backup slides, was thorough enough.
This was my first time participating in a large-scale national academic event. It provided an opportunity to reflect on the changes I have undergone in the approximately one year since joining the lab, as well as to introspect on the areas where I am still lacking.
At the event, I had the chance to see presentations from graduate students and even assistant professors from different research labs across various universities. The differences in presentation skills and familiarity with the slides were evident, and I took this as a valuable learning experience.
Moreover, it was a rare opportunity to explore a wide range of research topics, with my main focus being on composite material research, which is related to my current work. I was able to approach the field of composites from an experimental perspective, which was different from my previous experiences.
The only regret I have is that I had planned to meet and exchange ideas with a student named Lin, who is conducting research on vibrations, but he was unable to attend the symposium. It was unfortunate that I couldn't engage with a peer from the same field.
Listening Session 1
The Impact of Natural Fiber Composites on the Strength, Ductility, and Mechanical Properties of Sandwich Structures
Exploring the Impact of Different Sandwich Structures on Impact Energy. The analysis of results shows that as impact energy increases, the edgewise compressive strength decreases. Among the three materials, GFRP exhibited the highest edgewise compressive strength. It was also found that regardless of the failure mode, the edgewise compressive strength remained higher than the face sheet buckling.
Listening Session 2
Design and Simulation Analysis of Low Carbon Carbon Fiber Steel Toe Structure
Exploring the Impact of Recycled Carbon Fiber Powder on Carbon Fiber Composite Plates. Tensile and bending tests were conducted separately. The results showed that adding a small amount of recycled carbon fiber to the material provided the best strength in the bending tests.
Listening Session 3
Evaluating the Static Strength of Adhesive Joints Reinforced with Carbon Nanomaterials Using Numerical Simulation Methods
Through experimental and simulation comparison, cohesive zone model analysis and experiments were conducted. The results showed that after adding nanofillers, the maximum load of the adhesive joints, as analyzed by the cohesive zone model, was effectively increased. The optimal enhancement occurred with a 9:1 filler ratio. The experimental results were consistent with the simulation trends.
Listening Session 4
Study on the Mechanical Properties and Failure Characteristics of Carbon Fiber Composites Reinforced with Aerogel
With the widespread development of composites, the issue of recycling has gained increasing attention. This study focuses on improving the material properties of BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) and discusses its failure characteristics. The results show that the strength of recycled BMC materials varies depending on the fiber-containing regions. During tensile and compressive tests, the strength is greater when the applied force is perpendicular to the fiber direction.
Listening Session 5
Strength and progressive failure predictions of T-joint laminated composites using 3D continuum damage modeling
The presenter is an Assistant Professor at National Cheng Kung University, and the topic is "Strength and Progressive Failure Prediction of T-Joint Laminated Composites Using a Three-Dimensional Continuous Damage Model." Two models, CDM (Continuum Damage Model) and CZM (Cohesive Zone Model), are used to predict failure in the target material. (This study only discusses the elastic region and does not consider plasticity issues.)
