Session Description: This poster will highlight Johns Hopkins doctoral research that focuses on democratic practices and inclusivity. The research hypothesis posits that teacher professional development can enhance student civic empowerment by improving teachers' action civics pedagogy through three key factors: creating democratic classrooms characterized by empathy and conversation, increasing student voice, and developing teachers' competencies in action civics. The professional development intervention comprised two main components: 1) professional learning sessions and 2) professional learning communities. The Mikva Challenge organization facilitated the professional development by providing training on building community and empathy, engaging in courageous conversations, and amplifying youth voices.
