Session Description: Digital Notebooks can be created for use with students or for teacher planning purposes. This session will focus on customizing Google Slides and Add-Ons to make Digital Notebooks more effective, like Doctopus for differentiation based for diverse learners, Autocrat for personalization, and Diffit for engaging activities and leveled readings. We will explore Theme Builder as well as design elements. Attendees will get resources, templates, and inspiration for digital notebooks.

Session Description: Learn about the economics behind the Great Migration and the impact of the Great Migration on American society. The lesson demonstrated will use the art of Jacob Lawrence to teach the history and economics of the Great Migration. In the lesson, students match economics concepts and graphs to paintings in Jacob Lawrence’s The Migration Series to understand how different disciplines view a historical event. Other lessons in the “Economics and the Great Migration” curriculum will also be discussed. All lessons engage students in thoughtful group work and discussion by incorporating primary source documents, including art.

Session Description: For a moment, envision social studies topics as intricate webs of interconnected ideas, events, and perspectives. Traditionally, students spend significant time managing basic facts and identifying simple connections - the "what" of history. Our approach uses Gen AI to assist the teacher in the labor of creating customized foundational texts, organized and aligned in ways that allow students to delve deeper into the "why" and "how" of social phenomena.

Session Description: Presenters share findings from a study engaging elementary pre-service teachers in evaluating social studies classroom materials. They share the evaluation tool undergraduate pre-service teachers use to examine resources for: accuracy, authority, objectivity, inclusion of diverse perspectives, currency, coverage, learner fit and adaptability. Presenters will engage roundtable attendees in discussion regarding a) how we can enhance pre-service teachers’ selection of classroom materials that include nationally and globally diverse perspectives, and b) how we can advocate for quality, accessible social studies materials for K-5 classrooms.

Session Description: Participants will learn how to use children’s literature, financial and economic education concepts, and STEM activities to engage and teach elementary students. I will share three specific literature pieces, their lessons, and participants will be able to complete one of the three STEM activities. Other literature pieces, the financial and economic concepts, and the STEM activities will be provided.
