CAS Resource Center: Central High School IB Program
CAS is one of the three parts of the "core" of the IB Diploma Program, along with TOK and the EE. Successful completion of CAS is a requirement of the IB diploma.
CAS is meant to enhance your personal and interpersonal development. A meaningful CAS program is an experience of discovery of self and others. CAS will complement our challenging academic program in a holistic way, providing opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, accomplishment and enjoyment.
CAS is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity and service defined as follows.
Creativity: exploring and engaging in activities that lead to an original or interpretive product or performance
Activity: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle
Service: collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need
Five Stages of CAS: Throughout the CAS experiences, and especially during Service experiences and the CAS Project, students should strive to implement the following stages of CAS.
Investigation: Students identify their interests, skills and talents to be used in considering opportunities for CAS experiences as well as determine a purpose of the CAS experience as a whole. For service, students identify a need they want to address.
Preparation: Students clarify roles and responsibilities, develop a plan of actions to be taken, identify specified resources and timelines, and acquire any skills as needed to engage in the CAS experience.
Action: Students implement their idea or plan. This often requires decision-making and problem solving.
Reflection: Students describe what happened, express feelings, generate ideas, and raise questions.
Demonstration: Students make explicit what and how they learned and what they have accomplished. This is accomplished through the CAS project
