All students will need to complete Community Service in order to pass CAS. CAS will not be assessed simply by hours, which makes this different from the general CHS requirements. Students outside of the IB Program are required to complete between 20 and 30 hours of Community Service every year. CHS IB hourly expectations are lower, but there is an emphasis on the quality of the Service you complete.
You have two options for how to approach Service:
Continued Service: some of you are already CHS office aides or are engaged in tutoring and outreach programs. If this is you, keep doing what you are doing but begin logging hours, compiling artifacts, and have your supervisor or sponsor complete a Community Service Authorization form. You must be able to prove that you complete at least ten (10) hours of Service over the course of an academic year.
Service Events: If you are not an aide nor are you a member of an outreach club, you must complete at least three (3) Service events over the course of an academic year. This would be a stand-alone event that benefits the community (Community Service), and you must work the event for at least three (3) hours. At the time of the event, you must collect artifacts (photos, videos, lesson plans) and have a supervisor complete a Community Service Authorization form.
You may find the Community Service Authorization form at the bottom of this page.
You cannot be paid.
You cannot be compensated in any form (extra credit, grades, Varsity status, etc.)
Internships do NOT qualify as Service.
You MAY NOT complete tasks for family members or for profit-making organizations.
Service must be completed at a non-profit organization (CHS included)
Service performed with a club outside of school hours or during your lunch or during homeroom is acceptable (getting excused from classes to do Blood Drive or THON does not count)
Service performed at faith-based organizations (churches, synagogues, mosques) is acceptable as long as the activities are not religious. For example, activities performed at an after school program housed in a church are acceptable but assisting in a worship service or Bible Study is not.
Campaigning for a political party and/or candidate or working for an elected official is not accepted.. Non-partisan organizations, such as The Committee for Seventy, are acceptable. Working with the Voter Registration team is acceptable.
